CHAPTER 25

RINGS OF THE LORD

Konroh was on the balcony of Castle Imperious, looking out over the cloud layer that hung like an extension of the ground all around the upper spire. Above was his official domain, but all below owed him the very water they drank. From the Antaurs’ communal telepathy fountain to the Kawaiian brewers, it all came from him.

He could block the flow.

He wouldn’t.

But he could.

The same would be true for any successor, and yet they rolled dice to appoint any random social and mountain climber aiming to replace him.

With Konroh, they had water. Without him, who could say?

His enemies weren’t bad people. Just profoundly stupid.

Imagine, teaching them the error of their ways. Unifying the spire. Joining forces from top to bottom to thwart players’ efforts to ruin this place.

Dyz swayed out to join him. “You wanted to talk?” She teased the word ‘talk,’ as if he meant it as a euphemism.

“I’m expecting a delivery that’ll interest you.”

Dyz recoiled. “Not an heir, I hope.”

“Not that kind of delivery. Any news I should know about, while we wait?”

Dyz sat on the balcony’s railing, swiveled, and dangled her feet over the side. This side of the castle overlooked a sheer drop straight into the clouds, yet she appeared unconcerned. “The Traveling Circus needs more attractions. Maybe a higher-level opponent. Maybe just a second arena and more Razor Ghouls. I was also considering a PVP arena with prizes.”

“I’ve got a team working on cosmetic clothing options for the players to buy at the circus,” Konroh explained. “We can make Coins coming and going if we keep them interested in shopping. High prices. Easy money. Maybe tie people up for hours.”

Dyz leaned and rubbed against him. “Speaking of tying people up… Wait. Team? What team? Who’s making this stuff?”

“A couple of Paspar’s people. One of the Mercenary Archers with an eye for armor aesthetics. A Dragonoid jeweler who’ll be joining them once I get our delivery.”

A door swung open back inside their private chambers.

“Ahh, speak of the devil.”

The intruder came out to meet them, head bowed, the very dictionary sketch of deferential. He bore an ornate wooden box in clawed hands. “My Lord. My Lady.”

“All finished?” Konroh asked.

The Dragonoid jeweler opened the box. Upon a red velvet pillow inside were two rings: one encrusted with rubies, the other with amethysts; none of the gemstones protruded in a setting. “My finest work.”

Dyz reached for the amethyst ring as Konroh went to grab its ruby counterpart.

The jeweler snatched the box away. “No, no, no.” He lifted out the pillow and spun it 180 degrees. “Talking to yourself is easy enough, as it is.”

RECEIVED: PAIRED AMETHYST RING

Dyz slipped on the ruby ring.

Konroh put on the amethyst one.

“Can you hear me?”

“Oh, shit! Yeah! You got a telepathy spell put into ring form?”

“Sort of. It’s mutual mind reading.”

Dyz stiffened. “Oh shit, he’s going to hear my thoughts? OH SHIT! You heard that, didn’t you?”

“Yeah. It goes both ways.” Konroh took off the Paired Amethyst Ring. “If you’re uncomfortable, you can hang onto both.
